Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) remains a major health burden worldwide affecting 1 out of 4 women with cancer and accounting for 15% of all cancer-related deaths. In Qatar and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, BC represents 31% and 30% of female cancer cases, respectively. Observations are mounting to support that there are differences in the etiology, diagnosis and molecular features of BC in Qatar and the MENA region compared to other countries. Understanding the clinical and molecular features of BC in Qatar and the local region is essential to improve the management and survival of women affected by this disease.
The long-term goal of this proposed study is to improve the survival rate of patients affected by breast and other cancers in Qatar and the MENA region by identifying novel biomarkers for early diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of response to treatment. We will apply a multi-disciplinary approach with dynamic interactions between experienced research teams and clinicians. Through comprehensive molecular and cellular profiling of blood and tumor samples from several groups of cancer patients versus healthy individuals, we expect to develop diagnostic and predictive biomarkers to:
(1) identify and monitor families with high to develop BC to enable prevention,
(2) personalize the treatment of BC patients by selecting the most appropriate therapy.
