Abstract
The development of photovoltaic (PV) solar energy on rooftops in urban areas is equally important to the development of utility scale PV solar power PV plants. While large-scale PV plants have several advantages such as electricity generation at high efficiency and economies of scale, small rooftop PV systems are, in particular, attractive at urban scale due to their modularity and flexibility, and the possibility to generate the electricity close to the energy demand and consumption point, providing an effective solution for distributed generation. The aim of this project is to develop a dynamic solar cadaster for the city of Doha with the objective of providing an interactive GIS-based platform useful for urban solar mapping at high resolution. This platform will provide near on-the-fly computation of intra-day irradiation and PV output on tilted planes, with high spatial resolution (1 meter) on the rooftops of the buildings, and on other usable surfaces such as parking shades, available spaces next to residential compounds, or roads, overcoming limitations of a static solar cadaster, which only provides rooftop PV potential in terms of a yearly solar irradiation average. The project outcome will be a dynamic solar cadaster operationally deployed and disseminated on a web service accessible to authorized users, with real-time financial and technical feasibility of rooftop PV installation and energy production. The solar cadaster aims to support solar energy planning at urban scales, allowing to estimate how much PV energy can be produced in near real-time. This is in particular important for decision makers for city planning and energy management. Furthermore, it supports the promotion of solar energy, increasing the opportunities for renewable energy businesses and expediting the energy transition in Qatar.
