"PLASTICIZERS-CONTAINING WATER: BETWEEN TOXICITY ASSESSMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF EFFICIENT MEMBRANES FOR THEIR REMOVAL"

Project: Applied Research

Project Details

Abstract

Two big axes constitute the main objectives of our proposed project: 1) First, we will assess the toxic potential of plasticizers-containing tap water and WasteWater Treatment Plant (WWTP) using multidisciplinary approaches in Zebrafish adults and offspring embryos. These approaches will include cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and genotoxicity assays, 2) Second, we will synthesize a set of novel low-fouling reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for efficient removal of plasticizers from water. Then, a database with information on long-term membrane performance during water purification of priority plasticizers will be developed. The results from the toxicity assessment of plasticizers in zebrafish, if revealing any adverse effects that may threaten human health, will push the corresponding entities to revise the standards for the tap water and WWTP water qualities, as plasticizers are not in the list of chemicals under strict regulations.
