Abstract
SMART Distribution directly supports the National Development Strategy 2030, inviting collaboration with entities like Kahramaa and Qatar Foundation to co-create a toolbox for water system exposures to climate risks. The initiative enhances Qatar’s water quality by establishing and preserving existing network water quality standards. Deterioration in water quality during storage/distribution can result from stochastic/deterministic events linked to biological growth and inorganic precipitation (biofilm, inorganic accumulation/detachment). A Water Quality Test Bed will be set up to analyze the impact of deterministic factors like variation in ambient/water temperature on microbial growth, discoloration, and turbidity. Rapid detection systems will be developed to identify climate driven stochastic events and their impact on said water quality parameters. Online flow cytometry will evaluate microbial fluctuations, supported by sensors measuring ORP, pH, and turbidity. This data will guide a hybrid modeling approach, while a living lab at Education City will test methodologies in real-world settings. Developed real-time probes will monitor water quality fluctuations online in main distribution networks, offering insights into baseline variations at scale. Collaborative endeavors, potentially with local water utility agencies and ministries, will ensure alignment with local regulations while supporting end user implementation.
