Abstract
The chapter presents significant 20th-century studies that remain exemplary of optimal stylometric practice today, as well as some research efforts where quantitative investigation of writing style failed, causing overall reliability and validity issues in stylometric analysis. Specifically, it discusses the study by Mosteller & Wallace (1984) on the authorship of the Federalist Papers in the USA, an exceptionally well-documented treatise on the importance of function words in shaping writing style. Additionally, the chapter highlights the works of Burrows, which have significantly influenced modern stylometric research regarding stylometric features (Function Words) and statistical analysis (PCA). The chapter concludes with a selective presentation of research efforts that did not meet contemporary levels of scientific reliability.
