Abstract
There is a paucity of literature on "bottom-up" leadership approaches to CSR programs. Furthermore, evaluating CSR initiatives for social development through sport is still in its infancy. This study evaluates the CSR program of the Football Foundation of South Africa (FFSA), a social legacy that emanated from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to determine the impact of bottom-up leadership on the implementation, sustainability, and expansion of this program since its inception more than a decade ago. A qualitative research approach is applied whereby interviews with key stakeholders involved in the FFSA were conducted to (a) elicit the success factors of the program for the Gansbaai community, (b) determine opportunities for program expansion and improvements, and (c) elucidate recommendations for best practices for other CSR initiatives from mega-event legacy planning. The study's results are relevant for sports federations, governing bodies, and relevant business partners regarding the current policy of CSR programs through a lens of unconventional bottom-up CSR leadership.
