Abstract

This paper is a work in progress and falls under the course and curriculum design theme. It focuses on a preliminary pilot course designed to support the development of an engineering asset management course to be introduced as a special topic course in an electrical engineering degree program. The short course, titled “Engineering Asset Management in Power Grids”, was delivered as part of an extra-curricular enrichment program. Enrichment program courses are optional offerings available to students of all academic levels, from first-year students to seniors, typically held during semester breaks. The short course on Engineering Asset Management was introduced as a pilot course in October 2023 to assess students' interest. In addition, the course was also offered to engineers from the industry to obtain their views on the importance of the topic and the course contents. The pilot course had a total of 20 participants, comprising 9 students and 11 engineers. It spanned three days, each focusing on a specific theme and featuring three sessions. The first session introduced the foundational concepts, theories, and methodologies. An industry expert shared practical insights and related experiences in the second session. The third session engaged participants in collaborative activities and discussions, with students and industry engineers forming teams to complete various tasks. Additionally, Session 3 included multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to assess participants' comprehension of the material. The course was well received by the industry and drew considerable interest. Furthermore, the assessment results prove the ability of the student to comprehend the topic even without prior deep knowledge of power grid equipment. Accordingly, a full course is under development and will be offered as an elective for junior and senior level students in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025.
