Abstract

Combined concatenated coding and nonlinear equalization for magnetic recording partial response channels that suffer from nonlinear distortion was studied. The RAM-search/Viterbi-detector (RS-VD) algorithm was extended to a posteriori probability (APP) and soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) detectors that were used with turbo-coded channels. The performance could be improved if the channel detector (RS-SOVA) and code decoders pass information back and forth to each other in an iterative manner.
