Abstract

Compaction has a significant effect on the performance of asphalt mixtures. This is confirmed by the results of several studies on the effects of compaction methods on mixture mechanical properties and field performance. However, there is little research on the effect of compaction on skid resistance of asphalt pavements. This study evaluated the effect of compaction method and level of compaction on skid resistance of asphalt mixtures. Several field test sections were constructed using different asphalt mixtures and compacted using different rollers. The results showed that the macrotexture of asphalt pavements changed at different levels of compaction due to densification of asphalt mixtures. The skid resistance decreased with number of roller passes, and the vibratory roller was found to yield a smoother surface with low skid resistance compared to the static roller. In addition, the X-ray analysis of the void distribution toward the surface explained and correlated well with the mean profile depth and skid measurements.
