Abstract

This chapter focuses on Flickr and analysis of its social networks by NodeXL software. Collectively, the Flickr community has created a large, ever-growing vocabulary of tags that is the foundation for accessing and managing content on Flickr. It is interesting to study the interplay between social interactions and tagging practices in Flickr. This chapter demonstrates how that can be done using NodeXL. It presents analysis of several Flickr networks to demonstrate how to use NodeXL to gain insights into content and interaction patterns among Flickr users. It explains steps of importing Flickr data into NodeXL, working with Flickr data, and NodeXL visualization and analysis of Flickr networks. Examples of NodeXL visualization and analysis of Flickr networks that are described include related tags network to identify landmarks and tourist attractions for a given location, disambiguation of tag meaning by identifying clusters of related tags, and user networks that result from users' interactions through comments on each other's photos.
