Abstract

The surface free energy of the bitumen and aggregate that constitute asphalt mixtures is an important property that influences its performance. The surface free energy components of the bitumen and aggregate affect the adhesive bond strength between the bitumen and aggregate and the cohesive bond strength within the bitumen. Addition of polymers, addition of anti-strip agents, and oxidative aging are types of modifications that affect the chemical and mechanical properties of bitumen. These modifications, in turn, affect the surface free energy of the bitumen. This paper examines the effect of different modification types on the surface free energy of the bitumen and concomitant parameters that are related to the performance of the asphalt mixtures using the surface free energy components of both the bitumen and aggregate.
