Abstract
Application of sensor systems in bioprocesses is not as widespread as expected due to stringent requirements of aseptic conditions, high number of analytes, rapid response, and lengthy signal stability. Advances in sensor technology, analytical science, and microelectronics may pave the way to the development of various in situ and ex situ sensors for monitoring industrial bioprocesses. However, full automation of flow injection, analysis, and sampling procedures, and improved reliability and sensitivity of such sensors, as well as miniaturization, are still much needed for use in complex industrial culture media. This article gives an overview of diverse sensing schemes and the ongoing developments in the field of bioprocess monitoring of physical parameters, biomass and viability, and chemical parameters.
