Abstract

Moving toward Smart Grid systems is becoming a priority for power service providers in many countries. Effective communications constitute a crucial component for the successful implementation of Smart Grid. This paper introduces a communication framework which can be used to classify and integrate the various communication networking entities in a Smart Grid environment going from sensors at the consumer's premises to the Energy Service Provider command and control center. The paper discusses the various communication technologies and protocols which can be utilized for such purpose and show potential design scenarios which can be used. Security considerations are also addressed in the proposed framework.
