Abstract

Most of the reported research dealing with membranes focuses on membrane processing [1,2], surface modification [3,4], and antifouling properties [5,6]. More recently, molecular dynamics simulations of the physical and mechanical properties of nanoporous graphene membrane were conducted [7-11]. However, experimental investigations of the mechanical behaviors under complex loading modes with environmental effects for porous membranes are rarely reported. According to Scopus database, the annual publications on desalination and water treatment membranes has grown from 1050 publications in 2004 to nearly 2500 publications in 2014 as shown in Fig.13.1. On the other hand, the number of annual publications that investigate the mechanical properties of polymeric membranes has increased from 20 publications in 2004 to about 100 publications in 2014. However, these publications still represent less than 5% of the annual publication that deals with polymeric membranes.
