Abstract
A method of forming a compound of Formula (I): the method comprising the steps of (i) providing a compound of Formulae (II), (III) or (IV); wherein R1, R2 and R4 is H or optionally substituted alkyl or phenyl; and R3 is H; and (ii) reacting the compound of Formula (II), (III) or (IV) with CO2 in the presence of a Pd(0) source and a phosphine ligand to form a compound of Formula (I). R1, R2, R3 and R4 are preferably H; particularly the compound of step (i) is 1,3-butadiene. The phosphine ligand is preferably of the formula PR5R6R7, wherein R5, R6 and R7 are independently selected from optionally substituted aryl, linear alkyl, cyclic alkyl, cyclic heteroalkyl or adamantyl; and is preferably tris(2-methoxyphenyl)phosphine (TOMP). The Pd(0) source is preferably selected from Pd(acac)2, Pd(OAc)2, PdCl2(MeCN)2, Pd(dba)2, [PdCl(allyl)]2, Pd2(dba)3 or a Pd(II) complex capable of being reduced in situ to produce a Pd(0) species, in particular Pd(acac)2. The prepared compound of Formula (1) is preferably (E)-2-ethylidenehept-6-en-5-olide. Claims are also directed to a compound of Formula (1) obtained or obtainable via the disclosed method. Methods of converting the compound of Formula (I) to other compounds are also claimed.
