Abstract
Several applications ranging from low-speed voice and data to high- speed imaging and interactive traffic, with widely varying characteristics, are expected to share common transmission resources over IP and ATM networks. As a result, the aggregate statistical behaviour of the multiplexed traffic will be more complicated to model, from their individual statistical behaviour. A challenging problem is to characterize, as a function of the desired quality of service, the effective bandwidth requirements of the aggregate bandwidth. This paper investigates the behaviour of multiplexed traffic streams (e.g., voice, video, and high-speed data) on a given connection in high-speed data networks. Bandwidth estimation models are then developed.
