Abstract

Personalized medicine is a medical model that envisages the early detection of individuals at risk of developing diseases for improving preventive measures, enabling precise diagnosis of patients with the aim of providing appropriate therapy, and predicting the prognosis and treatment response to enhance efficacy and reduce adverse effects of treatment. Conventional practice of medicine has relied mainly on symptomatic treatments, evolving into more evidence-based and mechanistic approaches in the past few decades. Personalized medicine is a continuation of this evolution, and several technologies developed over the last decades have catalyzed the progress in this field, impacting the way medicine is practiced. While genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics have helped establish this model of healthcare, metabolomics is adding further impetus to the growth of personalized medicine.
