Abstract
The characteristics and properties of the lignite deposits in Northern Ireland have been discussed. The methods of drying and the problems associated with the drying methods are reviewed. Lignite offers a whole new industrial base in the Northern Ireland community; its potential uses range from electricity generation, the production of pulverized fuel and briquettes to the manufacture of activated carbons, chars, synthesis gas, liquefied fuels and waxes.
