Abstract

This paper presents a simple and effective preprocessing method developed for editing compressed video sequences. The proposed method involves extracting information about different video segments from the compressed bitstream. The algorithm is not designed to distinguish among types of segments but rather to indicate the position and duration. Since no decoding of the bitstream is done, the computational load of the algorithm is very low. Although the experimental results are shown on MPEG compressed video sequences, the algorithm can easily be applied to MJPEG, MPEG4 sequences given the header information.
