Abstract

The proposed procedures to use the Superpave Gyratory Compactor to derive energy indices that represent asphalt mixture densification and distortion characteristics are reviewed. The indices are either based on volumetric measurements or force measurement sensors built in the gyratory compactor or using a pressure-measuring device inserted on top of the mixture sample, such as the Pressure Distribution Analyzer (PDA). Since these methods can only measure aggregate structure stability at high compaction temperatures, the study includes a proposal to include binder damage resistance measures estimated from the DSR at design pavement temperatures.
