Abstract

The chapter's narrative moves the spotlight from hybrid regimes to a fundamentally autocratic polity that has placed knowledge production at the core of its development strategy in a context in which the values of democracy do not dominate the civic culture. It explores the emergence of a National Development Strategy and the role of the Qatar Foundation as the main research funder in terms of the position and relevance of the social and political sciences. The chapter's main conclusion is that what appears to be emerging in Qatar is a new form of co-option, as these disciplines are increasingly directed towards fulfilling political priorities rather than questioning the legitimacy of the ruling system.
