Abstract

This chapter reviews the history of football development in South Africa, commencing with the game’s early origins during the era of colonialism. An outline of the game’s development during the twentieth century is provided, in which its key phases of formalisation, professionalisation and commercialisation are discussed. Apartheid planning and legislation became major influences on the development and support for the game during this time.
