Abstract

In this chapter we rearticulate an explanation of the rūh (the spiritual ̣ domain of the human psyche) within the context of Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy (TIIP) spiritually focused psychotherapy before we proceed with a case illustration. The theoretical section covers the definition and conceptualization of the spiritual domain of the human psyche and its dysfunctions. The various possibilities for positive modulation of the spiritual domain through motivated behaviors (“Islamic mechanisms”) that utilize dhikr (spiritual exercises and litanies of remembrance of the Divine) are described. The therapeutic concept for TIIP spiritually integrated or rūhānī-based psychotherapies specifies how these Islamic mechanisms can be rendered into potential spiritually based psychotherapeutic interventions.
