Abstract

The mechanical behavior of the superplastic Pb-Sn eutectic alloy was studied under conditions of transient loading and relaxation, and under conditions of torsion and tension-torsion in which multiaxial loads were measured. It was observed that the alloy exhibits transient behavior suggesting development of structural hardening. Constrained end torsion tests revealed axial stresses, indicating the development of anisotropy in an initially isotropic superplastic material. These observations suggest that there are important structural developments in superplastic deformation additional to the grain boundary sliding which is well known to occur.
