Abstract

This paper focuses on potential of electricity generation from bagasse produced in sugar mills of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The seven operating sugar mills with total installed capacity of 45720 TCD crush about 2535958 tons sugarcane per year. The average bagasse produced by these sugar mills is about 786732 tons per year. This indicates a significant potential of electricity generation, which can help in mitigating the power shortage in the province. This paper presents four different scenarios to evaluate the electricity generation potential of KPK sugar mills, which results in the range between 83 MW and 275 MW, depending on the crushing capacity and technology used in sugar mills. The analysis shows that, generating electricity from bagasse produced by sugar mills can contribute its share towards reducing shortfall in the electricity for the KPK province.
