Abstract

This book is a fine example of 'post-positivist' policy analysis that insists on the importance of ideas, identities, and discourse in politics. Politics is 'a struggle about meaning,' and is itself bound up in structured power relations. Abortion politics therefore resonates with deeper discords over representations of gender, sex, and social equality. The three separately authored essays (there is a jointly-written introduction) are loosely organized around this methodological principle, as well as the importance of the medicalized discourse on abortion and recent challenges from the pro-life and pro-choice perspectives.
