Thermal Behavior and Photovoltaic Performance of Monofacial and Bifacial Silicon Heterojunction Modules under Desert Conditions

Abstract

A comparison study was conducted between a monofacial silicon heterojunction (SHJ) and a bifacial SHJ modules mounted at a tilt-angle of 22 deg. facing south at outdoor testing conditions (Doha, Qatar). The SHJ bifacial module showed 11% higher energy yield over the SHJ monofacial. Moreover, the bifacial module showed again in the energy yield ranging from 8% up to 17% as compared to the silicon monofacial technology depending on the total irradiance and albedo during three operating conditions, namely clear sky day, rainy day and dust storm day. The increase in the energy yield is attributed to the reflected irradiance received by the bifacial module. An average albedo value of 43% was measured. In addition, a Finite Element Method (FEM) model was developed to study the thermal behavior of glass/back sheet and glass/glass module configuration. The heat losses of the bifacial glass/glass (G/G) and the monofacial glass/back sheet (G/BS) module was also compared and was found that the rear surface of the bifacial G/G module accounted for extra 6% heat loss to surrounding.
