Towards an Islamic theory of knowledge

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The main challenge facing the reconstruction of an Islamic theory of know lies in the reductionist attitude, characteristic of the two main scientific trad of modern scholarship: the empiricist and the rationalist. Both are averse to according scientific value to any knowledge that transcends sensible experience.
The task of enunciating an Islamic epistemology consists, therefore, restoring to Divine Revelation the authority to furnish the ontological and e foundations of scientific activities.
This paper addresses itself to this specific need by refuting the correspondence theory of truth and establishing coherence as its alternative criterion. It presents as an alternative theory of truth based on a combination of the principles of correspondence and coherence or correspondence through coherence.
