Abstract

The paper discusses some of the applications of X-ray computed tomography in the characterization of aggregates and asphalt mixes. These applications include the mathematical reconstruction of aggregates and analysis of their shape using spherical harmonic series. X-ray computed tomography is also used to quantify the internal structure of asphalt mixes in terms of air void distribution and aggregate packing in order to characterize the differences among mixes prepared using different materials and compaction methods. X-ray computed tomography images are coupled with a numerical solution of the fluid flow equations in order to simulate fluid flow and predict the permeability of asphalt mixes. The paper also reports on the findings from a study aimed at the characterization of the spatial distribution of damage in asphalt mix specimens subjected to compressive loads at relatively high temperatures.
